That happens sometimes when I get excited and I’m really excited to finally be able to share this with you! So let me back up and tell you a little bit about me and my journey to find the truth about couponing. My name is Jessica Richardson. I am a proud mother of four wonderful kids (with another one on the way). Prior to 2006 our family was much like any other. I was a stay at home mom with a wonderful husband who worked hard to take care of us. We weren’t rich by any stretch of the imagination but we could at least comfortably pay all of our monthly bills. We had even managed to pay off all of our credit card debt.
Then I remembered something that Reid and I talked about a few years before. He had a friend and his wife used coupons to save them lots of money. I had seen people on TV getting carts of food for less that $5 but I always thought it was fake or staged somehow. But now I was desperate and looking for a way to take at least some of the financial burden off my husband. I was willing to try almost anything to help my family, as long as it was moral, ethical, and I could do it from home, so I started researching.
What I found were people all over the country using coupons to save many thousands of dollars every year and feeding their families on about 1/3 of what I was spending! I thought I was great at stretching a dollar, I was EXTREMELY FRUGAL, but what these people were saving made what I was doing look like a joke! These people took the old adage of "A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned" to a whole new level! It took me several weeks of reading hours and hours every day to try to understand what the people on-line were talking about. Couponing has its own language that only those on the "inside" really seem to understand. Some of it I understood right away, but most of it was like Greek to me. One blog would say do this and another would say do that. It was very confusing and to be honest, a little scary and intimidating. Finally, I decided I couldn’t research and study this forever. I just needed to give it a try. So I printed some coupons that the people online said I should and simply did what everyone else was doing. It was a special deal for Juicy Juice. It seemed easy enough so I headed to the store and paid for the juice the way the bloggers told me to and to my amazement the total ended up being zero, nada, zilch! Completely FREE!! I couldn’t believe that on my very first try I had just bought 8-Six Packs of Juicy Juice and my total was $0!!! I had never been so excited; I knew that I was onto something that was going to change my life! I think that I floated out of the store that day!
I had succeeded in cutting our household food and personal care budget by more than 90% & we were eating better quality foods than ever before.
Over the next year, word had spread outside my circle of friends and family and people started asking me to teach classes. The classes were small in the beginning but I was seeing lives change and I was so excited that the same joy I found in using coupons was contagious! Others around me were succeeding too! The classes grew in size and demand, and each class was better than the last as I learned how to teach couponing in a simple and comprehensive fashion (teaching effectively is not the same thing as being able to do it yourself). Many families have been hurt by the economy and it seemed everyone wanted to learn how to save money. We had tons of fun in the classes and the results were outstanding! Life was good. Or so I thought.
